Immerse yourself in the intersection of art, theater, and social commentary with a special adaptation of Aristophanes’s ancient Greek comedy, Assemblywomen. This live performance is part of the exhibition “Power of the People: Art and Democracy” and is directed by Emerson professor Dana Edell, along with talented undergraduate performing arts students.
Originally performed in 391 BCE, Assemblywomen is a hilarious, gender-bending farce where the women of Athens take the reins of government, questioning the decisions and capabilities of their male counterparts. Through satire and bold humor, they set out to prove that “anything boys can do, girls can do better.” This modern take highlights the timeless and absurd dynamics of governance and power that still resonate today.
