In collaboration with MassArt, we are honored to welcome Claudio Eshun, a.k.a Don Claude, to showcase his latest photo-based installation “Light Shines from Her Fingers,” which will be on view at The Gallery at The Station May 11 through June 3.
“Light Shines from Her Fingers” features a series of portraits that showcase Claude’s own mother inside his childhood home, and also represent mother figures who inspire and sacrifice for their children’s future. The use of repurposed materials is a prominent feature of the exhibit, reflecting the artist’s appreciation for creativity and innovation in reducing waste.
On June 3, we invite you to join Claude for a closing ceremony, where the community will have the opportunity to hear from the artist himself on what inspired this installation, while also enjoying a taste of West African cuisine from Worcester’s ākra eatery & juice bar.
Get to Know the Artist: Don Claude
No stranger to The Fenway, Claude received his MFA degree in Photography from MassArt in 2021, and was a recipient of MassArt’s MFA Fellowship Award in 2022 where he earned a residency at MASS MoCA. Claude has also shown his work at the Beacon Street Gallery, The White Room, The Nave Gallery, and the MassArt x SoWa graduate gallery.
Claude draws inspiration from his past and places that have influenced his upbringing, including Ghana, Italy, and the United States, and assembles photographs – either found, collected, or designed – to explore his multiple pasts and possibilities for the future. Appearing as a character in his work as “Don Claude,” the tableaux approach allows a variety of characters to take a storytelling role, eliciting emotional registrars of experience, with a focus on highlighting the experiences of Black individuals from a multiplicity of backgrounds.
