5 Signs Blackbird Doughnuts’ Heart Belongs to Boston

This is not a drill! Blackbird Doughnuts opened in The Fenway last month and all we can say is: YAAAS! As if the world-class culinary lineup in the neighborhood doesn’t already delight locals and visitors alike, adding gourmet doughnuts to the mix certainly sweetens the deal. Located at 20 Kilmarnock Street, Blackbird Doughnuts goes above and beyond with its brioche beauties and captivating coffee. But there are many more reasons we love this amazing company—and from the looks of things, that love is quite requited. This booming business is all about Boston.

See what we mean.

They’re Born and Raised Here

The entire Blackbird family—from founder and partners to employees—grew up and live in the area, and it’s those roots that guide the decisions they make. Rebecca Roth Gullo, owner of The Gallows Group, sums it up nicely: “We're part of a homegrown, home-run organization.”

They Buy Local Ingredients

Local is the name of the game for Blackbird Doughnuts, creating both unique and classic flavors—hello, Boston Cream Bismarck!—using as many locally sourced ingredients as they can. They harvest their own honey in the South End, and many of their house-made fillings and toppings are supplied by Jim Buckle, former head farmer of Allandale Farm in Brookline. Despite running his own Buckle Farm in Maine these days, he continues to deliver the goods!

They Bake in Boston

Prefer your pastries fresh as can be? Blackbird Doughnuts is the only artisanal doughnut shop in Boston that bakes on site, which contributes to that unique, fluffy texture we just can’t get enough of. Everything’s made daily at their flagship location in the South End at 492 Tremont Street. Early birds can even catch their bakers in all their doughnut-making bliss there!

They Bake for Boston

Showing hometown pride has become a habit at Blackbird Doughnuts, as they create whimsical and themed doughnuts throughout the year. They recently came out with an ode-to-the-Red Sox baseball design in the ultimate Americana doughnut—apple pie a la mode. And word has it they’re developing their own savory take on every fan’s favorite Fenway Frank (aka MLB’s 2017 Hot Dog Madness winner)! They also have something fun planned for the New Kids on the Block concert coming to Fenway Park. Stay tuned!

They Back Boston Organizations

Blackbird Doughnuts gives back to the Boston community in ways both big and small. In addition to providing goods for neighborhood, school and team fundraisers and events, they donate significant dollars to several nonprofits annually. They support Fenway Health, for example, an organization committed to the health and well-being of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, every year by celebrating Pride Week and donating profits. They also donated to Fenway Health in solidarity after the Orlando nightclub massacre. “We are a philanthropy-focused organization, dedicated to helping fund local Planned Parenthood, ACLU, the Peter's Park Organization, and others,” says Roth Gullo.

If that’s not enough to make you want to fly right over to Blackbird Doughnuts and satisfy your sweet tooth and coffee cravings, we don’t know what is.
