Let’s set the summer scene: It’s Friday night in The Fenway. Work’s out for the weekend. Sidewalks are a bustle and amazing aromas fill the sultry air. You and your friends are craving something satisfying and flavorful for dinner. You could trail the hungry masses to one of the many awesome patio dining situations, and bars and restaurants with outdoor seating spots in the neighborhood. Or you could do things a little differently and create a slice of picnicking paradise away from the crowds. Here’s an idea: snag a salad and head to a nearby park as the sun goes down. Here’s a rundown of the best picnic spots in The Fenway, and a taste of what Sweetgreen has on the menu this summer to help you achieve peak picnic perfection.

Mexican Corn Elote Bowl at Evans Way Park

This salad keeps coming back to Sweetgreen’s seasonal summer menu for the main reason that people can’t get enough of its Mexican street corn-inspired flavors. It’s stocked with warm quinoa, organic arugula, roasted corn and peppers, tomatoes, shredded cabbage, and local goat cheese. It’s also sprinkled with spicy sunflower seeds and dressed with a lime cilantro jalapeño vinaigrette. Order online, pick up, and have a pleasant picnic in Evans Way Park, a nice stretch of green grass dotted with trees along the Emerald Necklace and set on the MassArt campus.

Strawberry Fields Salad at the Keheller Rose Garden

If you’re looking for a touch of whimsy, perhaps for date night, indulge in the Strawberry Fields salad over at the Kelleher Rose Garden in Back Bay Fens. Romance abounds in this beautiful 1930s-era garden filled with 1,500 roses, statues, trellises and water fountain—the perfect place to picnic with a bowl of locally grown strawberries and snap peas, organic arugula, organic spinach, cucumbers, cilantro, and local feta. This salad is also topped with spicy sunflower seeds and drizzled with lime cilantro jalapeño vinaigrette. Add chicken for more protein and pair it with a refreshing and “herbaceous” Blueberry Basil Fresca.

Spring Chicken Salad at The Fenway Victory Garden

Word has it National Zucchini Day is August 8. But that shouldn’t stop you from picking up a few of Sweetgreen’s Spring Chicken Salads and savoring their seasonal ingredients over in The Fenway Victory Gardens all summer long. This salad stars roasted zucchini, yellow squash and green beans, and is loaded with organic mesclun, shredded kale, basil, organic carrots, parmesan crisps and roasted chicken drizzled in a pesto vinaigrette. Enjoying every bite on a blanket in The Fenway Victory Gardens is guaranteed to not only be gorgeous, but special too. The 7.5 acre space boasts 500 gardens, and was established in 1942, which makes it the oldest continuously operating Word War II Victory Garden in the United States.
